Unlocking the Power of Generative AI: A Transformative Journey of Discovery and Potential
Generative AI is rapidly transforming the way businesses work, offering unprecedented opportunities to save time, streamline operations, and innovate. But if you’ve been feeling that you should be upskilling yourself or your team in AI but are finding the idea somewhat daunting, you’re not alone. I've walked the path from hesitation to transformation myself, and having now taught many other business professionals to leverage generative AI, my fellow trainers and I recognize a distinct pattern in the AI Adoption Journey.
That’s because truly AI isn't just about learning a new tech tool; adoption becomes a profound process of professional growth that changes the way we work and think. Here’s the typical journey my business partners and I have seen.
Initial Resistance - Confronting the Unknown
When AI first began appearing in various data analysis platforms I use in my daily work in consumer insights, my initial reaction was skepticism and resistance. Like many professionals, I felt a mix of concern and apprehension:
How much disruption would AI bring to marketing & insights -- the industry I was passionate about?
Would this technology threaten the work I'd built my career around?
Though initially I wanted to push AI aside, my inherent curiosity (that part of me that could never resist Googling answers to random dinnertime questions) wouldn't let me. I needed to play with it, to experiment and see what it could do.
Curiosity Sparks Transformation
These explorations began with small, manageable experiments:
Using AI to analyze qualitative data like consumer comments or reviews
Having AI take over repetitive tasks (“time sinks”) like updating project timelines
Asking AI to help me draft and/or edit emails
In a relatively short time, I realized AI isn't a threat – it’s a superpower! Through experimentation, I discovered I could save 40-60% of the time I would spend on virtually any task.
I will acknowledge that sometime during this transformation, we all have our first experience handing over deliverables that were created with the help of AI. In this moment, there can be real fear …. Will the work be good enough?
But one thing I’ve learned in the past 18 months is my deliverables now aren’t just “as good as” my pre-AI deliverables: they’ve actually gotten better! That’s because using AI isn’t just about time saved; those freed-up hours represent opportunities created.
The opportunity I have valued most is how much more mind space AI has afforded me. By streamlining my work with AI, the work got better because I got better. I finally had the time to dream bigger and think deeper.
Team Empowerment and Collaborative Learning
My personal excitement quickly became a team-wide transformation. But I knew that simply introducing tools wasn't enough. AI integration is most successful with a structured, systematic, and supportive approach to implementation. Within my own team, as well as with the client teams we train, we take a progressive approach to skills development and focus on the practical day-to-day work of real humans doing their very real jobs.
We map out each team member’s deliverables and choose to work on one process at a time
We come together in a group environment to learn new skills, and then apply them to our individual processes, so each person makes progress in their real job, while also being able to talk about the skills with colleagues in other departments
We encourage and celebrate the effort, the learning, and the spirit of solving problems together and sharing our own experiences
In short, rather than focusing on learning a tool, we focus on building confidence, learning from experiments that did not work, and revealing possibilities.
From Practitioners to Innovators
What began as cautious exploration has evolved into something remarkable. My team and I didn't just learn to use AI; we’re now advocates and guides for others who want to do the same. We now work with clients to provide training to help their team members through the same approach we took – a collaborative learning environment with a focus on progressive skills development and immediate applicability to each person’s role so they see productivity gains right away.
