How to Get Unstuck with AI: Mastering the "Meta-Prompt"

Sometimes, the hardest part of using AI effectively is simply getting started. After countless experiments, we've found that the fastest way to get unstuck is to ask AI for help with the prompt below:
“I want to [goal], but I’m struggling with [specific challenge]. How can you help me?”
Think of this as your "meta-prompt," one you can use anytime you are hesitating or feel unsure in the next best action you can take. Below are three variations for using this prompt to move forward:
1. When you don’t know where to start.
We've all been there—staring at a blank screen, unsure where to begin. AI loves these situations.
I faced this myself when I decided to improve my daily productivity but had no idea how to structure my day. Instead of guessing, I asked:
“I want to be more productive each day, but I'm struggling to structure my schedule. How can you help me?”
AI immediately suggested customized daily routines that matched my workflow and personal priorities. (You can read exactly how that worked here.)
2. When you don't know what context to provide.
Sometimes you know your end goal, but not exactly what information AI needs to help you get there. In this case, flip the script and ask the AI to help you give it context:
“I want to create X. Please ask me questions that would be most helpful in creating the best possible version of X.”
When preparing for a recent speaking event, I simply asked AI to question me in ways that would result in a great talk. Using voice-to-voice interaction with AI made it feel like a casual conversation with a colleague, in which we discussed the audience, their likely background and needs, the length of the talk, desired outcomes, and more. Just speaking aloud my thoughts and answers quickly resulted in a strong and focused outline – in much less time than it would take just staring at a blank page trying to outline it myself.
3. When your prompts aren't working as expected.
Even the most experienced AI users can get stuck when prompts don't deliver the desired results. In these cases, ask AI to critique your prompt. Recently, a client of ours was building a custom GPT model to analyze complex spreadsheet logs of equipment downtime, by manufacturing line, shift, and type of problem encountered. The model kept miscalculating data and confusing the shifts. After numerous rewrites of the prompts to get AI to perform correctly, we shifted gears and instead prompted:
“Examine the errors you're making, and the current prompt that resulted in those errors. How can this prompt be improved to make your task more clear?”
Before we knew it, we had the answer we needed and the accuracy we sought was delivered quickly and easily.
Great outcomes start by clearly stating your struggle. Master this meta-prompt approach, and you'll find AI becomes an excellent problem-solving partner.
